The Canadian Global Energy Forum (CGEF) in concert with the Alberta Government Ministry of Jobs, Employment, Trade and Immigration, is delighted to be hosting a special delegation from the Santa Cruz Province of Argentina March 6, 2026, 9-11am at the McDougal Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  The Delegation will be headed by:

This high level delegation will be making a presentation on the Palermo Aike unconventional Hydrocarbon play

Background:

Palermo Aike is a major, emerging unconventional shale play located in Argentina's southern Santa Cruz province, touted as the "new Vaca Muerta" with an estimated 6.6 to 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent. Spanning over 12,600 , this deep-south formation is undergoing active exploration by YPF and CGC, with initial horizontal drilling completed to test its potential for light crude and gas. 

Key details about the Palermo Aike development include: 

• Geological Profile: Similar to Vaca Muerta, it features marine source rocks with depths between 2,800 and 3,500 meters.
• Location Advantage: It is situated near Río Gallegos and the coast, facilitating infrastructure development and exports.
• Active Development: Following successful fracking of initial exploratory wells in 2023-2024, the partnership is investing in further exploration to confirm commercial viability.
• Technical Challenges: Operations face harsh, cold weather conditions, with firms leveraging experience from similar environments.

Dr. David Johnson is a geoscientist with more than 40 years of Global, Canadian Frontier, and Western Canadian exploration and production (E&P) experience covering petroleum, natural gas and helium. In positions of progressive responsibility, David has worked for Shell, Exxon Production Research, ExxonMobil Exploration, Husky Energy, the Kuwait Oil Company, and KUFPEC. Dr. Johnson has executive, business development, operations, geoscience research, and technical E&P experience covering more than 40 petroleum jurisdictions in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. He has led bid-round acquisitions of more than 20 Production Sharing Agreements (PSA’s) and exploration licenses (EL’s); and made significant discoveries in the South China Sea, the Canadian Frontiers and Western Canada.

A reminder that SEAPEX will hold a Regional Convention (SRC 2026) and Farmout Forum in Manila at the Makati (Sports) Club from 13th to 15th April 2026 (Monday to Wednesday) and the programme has been released (see below). There was an overwhelming response for the call for abstracts.

The Asia Pacific Scout Meeting (APSC) will also be held at the same time in Manila on the Monday 13^th before the afternoon farmout and government opportunities forum. Following the conference there will be a three day field trip to Palawan and the option to take part in other activities on the Thursday.  The field trip is currently full but if you are interested please add yourself to the waiting list.
